Pure OCD Myth Buster: Debunking Common Misunderstandings

Pure OCD

Pure-Obsessional OCD or Pure OCD, Pure O as it is commonly referred, is perhaps one of the most misconstrued subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder. In contrast to the more known types of OCD, such as cleaning or checking rituals, Pure OCD is mostly of an internal nature, with repetitive, intrusive thoughts and mental rituals, that cannot be observed by people around. This has unfortunately created various myths that most of the times keep a person away in search of appropriate help. Why breaking some of those myths.

Myth 1: Pure OCD is only associated with taboo thoughts

Most individuals believe that Pure OCD concerns itself with the only intrusive thoughts that are either sexual, violent, or religious. Although these are in fact the most frequent ones, they are not the only ones. Individuals with Pure OCD can be obsessed with health, relations, morality or even questions which touch upon existence. The topics are broad and are sometimes highly personal.

Myth 2: It is not so serious as the so-called OCD

The fact that compulsions in Pure OCD are unseen in no way makes it any less agonizing. Obsessions can be exhausting and disruptive to the mind, as one tries to suppress his or her mind and behave in order to deal with the mere thoughts. In its pure form, OCD may have a catastrophic effect on the functioning of a person and on his/her mental health status.

Myth 3: It is nothing but having an over-thinking approach or a worrier nature

The myth reduces the severity of Pure OCD. Worry and overthinking are normal aspects in every-day life but Pure OCD is when a person experiences repetitive and intrusive thoughts that are in no way desired and, as a rule, disturbing. These are involuntary thoughts that are way above simple anxiousness or stressing out.
